Hansard: Volume 789
Opened by Lord German
To ask Her Majesty’s Government what is their assessment of the future of United Kingdom inland waterways . . . My purpose in this short debate is to shine a light on the value of our waterways, to examine the economic potential that they can unlock and to put to the Government a range of issues where government action can make a difference to realising the waterways’ full potential.
Lord German talked about regeneration and growth, as well as the contribution they make to water supply and transfer, drainage and flood management, and as a means of commercial transport, a point highlighted by the noble Baroness, Lady Jones of Whitchurch.
There are nearly 5,000 navigable miles of inland waterways . . . (which) continue to provide inexpensive and environmentally beneficial opportunities for moving freight around the country.
